Case Study and Resources:

Learning German with real-life Dialogues

Below, you'll find two German dialogues we've created. You can listen to the audio and follow along on the transcript! If you scroll a bit further down, you'll see a video where I go through the dialogue and show you exactly how to use it to improve your listening comprehension, find chunks, and create flashcards.  Viel Spaß!

Sample Dialogue 1:

Unit 5: Sonst noch etwas? - Auf dem Markt

Dialog 1: Ich hätte gerne Erdbeeren (Level A1)

Step 1: Listen to the DIALOGUE

Listen to the dialogue first. As you can see, there's a German transcript underneath the audio.

PS. If you want the English translation, scroll down a bit to download the annotated transcript pdf!

Step 2: identify The chunks in the dialogue

You can download the transcript where we've highlighted useful chunks (= short useful phrases), added a full English translation of the dialog and grammar explanations by clicking the button below!

You can also download the exercise solutions and the mp3 file of the audio here:

Download with right-click ---> "save as..."

Step 3: Memorize the chunks with flashcards

Just seeing chunks once is usually not enough for you to memorize them and be able to use them yourself. You need to revise them until you've "imprinted" them on your brain so they'll roll off the tongue in conversations!

One of the best ways to memorize chunks is through flashcards. We've created a sample flashcard deck on the Brainscape flashcard tool with chunks from the lessons that you can access for free here:

PS: You will have to create a FREE account to use Brainscape.
